In co-operation with the Institute for Protection of Monuments of Culture, and regional institutes, the PWMC “Vode Vojvodine” identifies and valorises hydraulic structures that represent cultural and industrial heritage of Vojvodina. The restoration of structures is planned in accordance to that and in compliance with their status and significance, with the tendency to protect them against total decay and to award the most valuable among them the status of monuments of culture.
The Becej Lock is located on the confluence of the DTD into the Tisza. It was completed in 1896 and it was the first in Europe that was driven by direct current produced on the structure itself using the difference in water level. It is believed that the Lock was designed in the Eiffel’s Studio. Currently it is used as a sluice. It is protected and it has the status of cultural property.
The steam pump in Zabalj is located near the Zabalj Bridge beside the Tisza. It was built in 1898 and it was among the largest in Vojvodina. The steam drive was used to put two centrifugal pumps into operation with the maximum capacity of 2.530 litres of water per second. The basin that this pumping station covered in terms of drainage was around 10.000 ha. The pump was conserved after 74 years of operation.
The mill in Mali Stapar was built in 1795 on the sluice of the DTD Canal. It has three levels and it is a very nice example of well preserved industrial heritage. The building of the Technical Headquarters, which was completed in 1898, is located in its close vicinity. The settlement of Mali Stapar was built for the needs of accommodation of experts who were involved in construction of the Grand Backa Canal. The process of protection of the whole area along the Canal, together with the mill and building of Technical Headquarters, is currently in progress.
Bezdan Lock was completed in 1856. It is located on the confluence of the DTD into the Danube. It is significant because it is the first concrete structure of that kind in Europe where submersible concrete laying was applied. The works were carried out by an engineer Johan Mihalik. The structure is significant as industrial and architectural heritage.
Pumping Station Plavna was completed in 1912 and it represents the most updated structure of that time in technical sense. It was the largest pump with diesel engines on the Balkans. Two generators that used to produce electricity for structures within the Pumping Station are connected onto diesel engines. The pump is still operational. It is located within the protected complex of the fortress in Bac.
